Seed Bed™ includes a cycled, coarse sheet sponge (6.28 x 5.5 x 0.78) and coarse intake sponge (3.1” x 1.6”, .6” ID) for hang on back filters. They contain freshwater nitrifying bacteria needed to process ammonia to nitrite and nitrite to nitrate; a complete nitrogen cycle. They are cycled without animals and are snail free. The sheet sponge can be cut to fit in virtually any filter box or canister or it can be used to baffle the output on a hang on back filter into the tank. The intake sponge is open on one end to fit over the filter intake and closed on the other end to prevent animals being sucked onto the bottom of the intake.
Cycled does not mean you will not see ammonia or nitrite. Effectiveness is dependent on bioload. I recommend feeding lightly and performing water changes while the bio filter catches up to the needs of your tank. This is best used in an aquarium that has animals in it. I do not know how they will respond to every fishless cycling method.
If the KH is low and/or the pH drops below 5.8 nitrifying bacteria will become dormant or die. If you need to boost the KH and raise the pH safely aragonite sand or crushed coral in a media bag in the filter is an excellent long-term solution. This can be sent in the same shipment with your filter.
